It's like a jungle...
Jun. 29th, 2017 06:59 pmI took my 16/17 year old students to Wolverhampton University today. It worked out well for me because I didn't have to arrange transport. They made their own way there and I went separately in my car.
On the way I was driving down the motorway when the traffic started to slow down and I found myself heading towards a car that was facing the opposite direction?! I avoided it and then I passed another 4 cars in the fast lane that were all stationary. One of them had a man slumped at the wheel unconscious. I had to make a quick decision whether to stop or not but I saw a woman running towards the cars to check if people were ok and a man jumping out of his car on his mobile so I figured I wouldn't be able to do anything more and I drove on.
The sessions at the uni were really interesting. There was one which compared poetry with rap. The lecturer used a Grandmaster Flash song - The Message (which I knew inside out from when I was a kid). Lyrically it's quality. She then used some Eminem which she compared with a 19th century poet.
There was a session on philosophy from a woman who told us that her work on the caste system actually caused some changes in the UK law on discrimination. Pretty cool.
And there was a session on creative writing from a guy who I remembered hearing being interviewed on Radio 4 a while ago. I might buy one of his books. He's written three novels, all set in Walsall, which is where I teach.
It was a really refreshing day. If I was a student I would definitely consider going there. Well impressed. The buildings have all been newly refurbished too. It looked like a cool place to study.
