People are like a mirror
May. 24th, 2017 08:16 pmOne thing I've been conscious of recently is raising my voice in the classroom and then keeping it at a loud level. It takes it out of you.
I was talking to a new teacher about this and he said that kids are like a mirror. They react the same way as you react. He said that he's been trying new techniques and has been standing at the front of his classes waiting, for sometimes 20 minutes, for everyone to stop and listen, and then whenever anyone has started to talk over him, he's stopped and waited, and gradually it's started to work. The kids have calmed down.
So I tried it, with a few classes and it worked. I even tried lowering my voice so I was almost whispering at times and the kids were all following, making sure they could hear. : )
I think it also works with other interactions, like on the school corridor - if you're confident and smile, you usually get a smile back. I've been doing it more recently. It's a good habit to get into.
After school I did a workout with Big Pete (the Geography teacher) in the school gym. He's been off work with severe depression lately but it was good to catch up with him. He said he'd tried to take his own life at one point but he's much better now. He's a really nice guy too.
The weather is currently beautiful over here and tomorrow is a cycle day.
Two more days and I've got a week off.
